We all want to live wrinkle-free. In the quest for eternal youth, science has given us BOTOX® Cosmetic. This safe, reliable, and highly popularized injectable is one of the most widely used methods for erasing fine lines and wrinkles. Sadly, the results from this treatment don’t last forever. While the effects do wear off and the wrinkles do come back, there are things you can do to prolong your outcome.
At Vita Aesthetics and Wellness, we aim to give you the beautiful, long-lasting results you deserve. As such, we’ve put together a list of methods that you can try to help maintain your wrinkle-free look. Get in touch to learn more and schedule an appointment at our Whittier, California office.
Why BOTOX® Cosmetic Doesn’t Last Forever
Before we begin, we’d like to answer a question that’s likely on your mind: why doesn’t BOTOX® Cosmetic last forever? – the answer comes down to science. BOTOX® Cosmetic is made of a nerve blocker called botulinum toxin. This substance blocks vesicles from releasing acetylcholine, causing paralysis. This paralysis is ideal in areas that are prone to wrinkles, as a lack of muscle movement in those areas prevents wrinkles from becoming deeper.
Unfortunately, since BOTOX® Cosmetic is a foreign substance, your body gradually breaks it down and flushes it out of your system. That’s why the effects of wrinkle reduction only last a few months. Now, here are a few methods you can use to maintain your results for as long as possible.
1. Avoid Using Facial Scrubs to Prolong BOTOX® Results
People often rely on several different methods to address aging signs. Along with BOTOX® Cosmetic, you may also employ facial serums and scrubs to keep your skin clean and youthful. However, using facial scrubs and other abrasive skincare products may actually do more harm than good following your injections.
Injectable treatments like BOTOX® Cosmetic need some time to settle into your skin in order to take full effect. An abrasive scrub can actually disrupt the settling process, dispersing the injectable and making it less effective in targeted areas. Therefore, it is advised that you avoid using these kinds of products for at least a week after your treatment.
2. Exercise Your Facial Muscles to Prolong BOTOX® Results
It may seem counterintuitive, but smiling, grinning, and frowning have actually been shown to speed up the onset and prolong the duration of BOTOX® Cosmetic. In fact, a study published in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology showed that 68% of participants believed exercising made muscle relaxation and wrinkle reduction occur faster. 59% of those participants found facial exercises effective in accomplishing this.
3. Smoking After BOTOX® Cosmetic is Not a Good Idea
Smoking and vaping have been shown to reduce the effectiveness of injectable treatments, including BOTOX® Cosmetic. For one thing, smoking causes wrinkles in the lips, known as “smoker’s lines.” Moreover, nicotine constricts blood vessels, reducing the flow of water, oxygen, and vital nutrients into the skin. This leads to premature aging and collagen loss – effects that may be difficult to counter even with injectable treatments. So, our advice is to avoid smoking in general.
4. Work With the Right Provider
BOTOX® Cosmetic and other injectables have become very popular these days. It’s now easier than ever to gain access to aesthetic treatments that were once reserved for Hollywood elites. However, this means that many underqualified providers have been popping up to fill the demands of the market.
At Vita Aesthetics and Wellness, we’re staffed by industry experts with knowledge of proper injection techniques. Our office is run by the Montes Medical Group, which has offered quality medical care and education for over 30 years. If you’re interested in an effective injectable treatment that lasts, look no further.
